The exciting extra-inning contest where the Los Angeles Dodgers beat the Toronto Blue Jays by one run drew a combined 51 million viewers in the United States, Canada, and Japanese territories. Major League Baseball stated this marks the most-watched World Series finale since the 1991 contest between the Minnesota Twins and Braves.

Broadcast Viewership Breakdown

Last Saturday’s epic game drew 27.33M viewers on Fox Sports networks, Fox Deportes and Fox’s digital services. Per Nielsen, it was the second most-watched broadcast of the previous week.

It also stands as the top-rated Fall Classic game since the 2017 final game between the Dodgers and Houston Astros, which drew 29.07M. This represents a sixteen percent increase over the previous finale featuring the Nationals and Houston Astros, which attracted 23.19M.

In the Nielsen ratings, Game 6 ranked fourth, the fourth game ranked 7th, the fifth game came in eighth, and Game 3 landed in thirteenth place.

International Audience Figures

In Canada, the climactic game recorded 11.6 million viewers on the Sportsnet network and the French-language TVA Sports channel. This made it the highest-rated English broadcast in Canada since the 2010 Winter Olympics.

In the Japanese market, where the final contest started at 9 PM in the local time zone, it drew 12 million viewers. This followed last Friday’s Game 6 – where World Series MVP Yamamoto gave up a single run in six innings – averaged 13.1 million viewers, making it the most-watched Fall Classic game on a sole broadcaster in Japan.

Series Averages and Patterns

The full seven-match series recorded over 15.7 million viewers on the Fox network, a 2% rise from the previous year’s Dodgers versus Yankees series. This represents the first time since 2015 and ‘16 that the Fall Classic has seen audience growth for two consecutive seasons.

Including the Game 1 broadcast on Univision, the total American average reached 16.1 million. The overall World Series viewership in the Japanese market was 9.7 million and 8.1 million in Canada.

The complete playoffs on Fox, FS1 and FS2 drew 8.09 million viewers, an 8% rise over last year and the network’s strongest postseason performance after the 2017 season.

MLB announced that the Fall Classic was televised in 203 countries and territories by 44 media partners in sixteen various languages.
