On his initial day in the mayor's office, Zohran Mamdani committed to “reinvent” the metropolis, ushering in “a new era” and an audacious beginning to his term.

A Historic Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, is the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the inaugural to be sworn in using the Qur'an.

“A moment like this is rare and rarer still is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

The ceremony was a dual event, starting with a midnight oath-taking in a former subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over political establishments.

A Sweeping Platform

Mamdani now begins one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a agenda promising:

• Free childcare
• Free buses
• A halt to rent increases for about 1 million households
• A pilot of city-run grocery stores

The projected $10 billion expense of these initiatives may pose a hurdle to fund. Mamdani has pledged to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and big business. However, as a municipality under the authority of the state government, he will require the backing of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Navigating External Headwinds

The new mayor will deal with concern from some Jewish New Yorkers alarmed by his past stances regarding Israel. Tensions were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past social media posts.

Mamdani has moved to address these concerns by persuading Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, avoiding the appearance of losing a top Jewish official.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has called Mamdani a “communist” and warned of withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly surprisingly cordial.

The Basic Tests of Leadership

In the end, New York mayors are judged on their ability in providing basic services: sanitation, curbing the rodent problem, fixing roadways, and ensuring smooth transit service.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's public safety record, pointing to record low numbers of murders and shootings in 2025, with 301 homicides recorded.

As his term begins, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the historic Gracie Mansion. The previous occupant offered a unusual piece of advice about a supposed resident spirit in the home, which reportedly only haunts those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his address with a direct statement: “The work has only just begun.”
